WTA Washington Day 3 Predictions Including Halep Vs. Kalinskaya

The WTA Washington Open 2022 program features four women’s singles second-round matches on Wednesday. Interestingly, none of these matches have ever been played before. Are we about to see the start of some exciting rivalry? Who do you think will advance?

Day 3 WTA Washington Predictions

Zhu Lin vs Kaia Kanepi

Head to head: first meeting

It was a pretty quick turnaround from Prague to Washington for Zhu Lin, but she did well in her first round win over Harriet Dart. Kaia Kanepi hasn’t played since Wimbledon, but she also wasted no time in dispatching Greet Minnen. Estonia is playing a slightly lighter schedule this year, but still has hardly suffered any early losses (until the grass season). With the return to more favorable conditions, Kanepi should find a way to lead the rally here.

Rebecca Marino vs Andrea Petkovic

Head to head: first meeting

Andrea Petkovic knocked out Clara Tauson in the opening round, but the Dane was playing for the first time in a while and was not yet ready for this level. The German veteran can still produce some great tennis at times, but she won’t be the favorite in this match. Rebecca Marino is coming off a qualifier and while all of her matches so far have ended in straight sets, she has proven that she is capable of raising her game when needed. Her strong hits should also compliment the Washington courts nicely.

Jessica Pegula vs Daria Saville

Head to head: first meeting

Daria Saville is quietly having a very good campaign and the last time we played on hard courts in the States she had a great run at the Sunshine Double. Likewise Jessica Pegula, who, like the Australian, has not competed since Wimbledon. Saville had a rougher start in Washington, where he survived a thriller against Miriam Bjorklund. It looks like a good matchup for Pegula who can be confident that she will be able to play her game as she will not be put under any enormous pressure by her opponent in the rally.

Simona Halep vs Anna Kalinskaya

Head to head: First meeting

Simona Halep has done very well on hard courts in the first three months of the season, but her opening round win against Cristina Bucs was shaky. At 6-4 5-2, the Romanian broke twice and had to finish the match 7-5. However, now that she has shaken off the rust, she should be back to her dominant best. However, Anna Kalinskaya could provide quite the challenge as she destroyed a blasted Madison Brengle off the court in her first match here.

Prediction: Halep in 2
