Madison Keys WTA Elite Trophy

Day 1 WTA San Jose Predictions including Keys vs Zhang

The main draw begins Monday on Day 1 at the WTA Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose, the traditional start to the US Open series. Karolína Plíšková and Madison Keys are a pair of notable names who kicked off their campaigns on Day 1. Each faces opposition they have faced in the past. Pliskova faces Katie Boulter, an opponent who has beaten her twice in recent months. While Keys faces Shuai Zhang, an opponent she has lost four straight matches to. Can either player break their losing streak? We also tip the rest of the matches of the day in a separate article.

Day 1 WTA San Jose Predictions

Karolina Pliskova vs Katie Boulter

H2H: Boulter 2-1.

It was a surprisingly frustrating match for Karolína Plíšková in 2022. Katie Boulter has already beaten the Czech Republic twice this year, each time from a set. Boulter beat Pliskova 3-6 7-6 6-4 at Wimbledon in their last match. Plíšková should primarily try to avoid a third loss in a row against Boulterová. I suspect that Plíšková will play sharp enough to win this time.
Tip: Pliskova in the 3rd

Alison Riske vs Elizabeth Mandlik

H2H: First encounter.

Elizabeth Mandlik caused the biggest upset of the tournament so far when she beat top seed Jil Teichmann in the final round of qualifying, the 21-year-old American winning her biggest 3-6 6-3 6-0. career. Mandlik’s reward is a meeting with Riske-Amritraj during Monday night’s session on the Stadium pitch. Riske has produced impressive results in 2022 and should be too solid and too experienced for Mandlik on this occasion. Expect the veteran to win this pretty comfortably.

Shuai Zhang vs Madison Keys

H2H: Zhang 5-2.

Shuai Zhang’s dominant 5-2 record against Madison Keys is confusing. Zhang has won the pair’s last four matches, but will still go into this match as an underdog. Zhang beat Keys 7-5 7-6 in San Jose last year in their last meeting. Keys’ form since a hot start to the season, culminating in a semi-final run at Australian Open. I’ll give Keys the benefit of the doubt here, she will no doubt want to avoid another loss to Zhang, five straight losses to a player of Zhang’s quality would be embarrassing for Keys.
Prediction: Keys 3
