ATP Los Cabos predictions for 1

With Wimbledon done and dusted and most of the big clay tournaments behind us, the ATP Tour is moving on to the American hard court swing. World #1 Daniil Medvedev returns to the court here in Los Cabos and is undoubtedly the favorite to lift the trophy. The Russian hasn’t played a competitive match in over a month, but is arguably the best hardcourt player in the men’s game. He is joined by the likes of Cameron Norrie and Felix Auger-Aliassime. However, Quentin Halys is only seed in action on Monday in the four matches played. On that note, let’s take a look at how these four matches should play out in our predictions for the first day of ATP Los Cabos.

ATP Los Cabos predictions for 1

Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez vs Rinky Hijikata

Head-to-head: 1 – 0 Hijikata

Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez received a wild card and with it a real opportunity to express himself on the ATP Tour. He will face Rinky Hijikata in the first round. Hijikata has been making waves at the ITF level for the past 12 months. The Aussie has won six titles on the circuit in that time. He has yet to show that he can perform consistently at the higher levels, but at 21, the Australian has plenty of time to change that. This match is a unique opportunity for both of these men. I expect Hijikata’s experience to be more important than Mendez having the home crowd on his side. Hijikata’s straight sets wins in their meeting earlier this year also seem to point to that, so I’m backing the Aussie here.

Henri Laaksonen vs Max Purcell

Head-to-head: First meeting

On ability alone, Henri Laaksonen is the easy favorite to win. The Swiss player has not been in great form in 2022. However, he has been in and around the top 100 for the last four or five years. In contrast, Purcell finished the year in the top 200 in men’s tennis just once. The Aussie will like this match to be played on hard courts as that is his preferred surface. However, Laaksonen is no slouch on the surface and has several hard-court Challenger Tour titles to his credit. Expect the Swiss to do a lot in this Purcell.

Prediction: Laaksonen in 2

Nick Chappell vs Chun-Hsin Tseng

Head-to-head: First meeting

This call is easy. Chun-Hsin Tseng won the junior Wimbledon and French Open in 2018 and many have touted him for big things on the ATP Tour. It took him a few years to get going, but Tseng now sits in the top 100 in the world. The former junior No. 1 will look to continue that upward trajectory with a good race in Los Cabos. His rival, Nick Chappell, never finished the year ranked lower than 374th. The American also has no singles titles at the ITF level or higher. So it’s fair to say that Tseng is a cut above Chappelle here and that should be reflected in a one-sided affair on Monday.

Prediction: Tseng in 2nd

Ricardas Berankis vs Quentin Halys

Head to head:

Monday’s main event should be a thrilling affair. Ricardas Berankis is a quality hardcourt player who has carved out a decent career. Six times in his career he finished the calendar year in the top 100 0n. The Lithuanian also has 13 challenger titles to his credit. Ten of those have come on hard courts, so he can never be taken lightly on this surface. In Halys, he faces a rising star on the ATP Tour. The Frenchman has climbed 130 places in the rankings since the end of 2020 and is an impressive 27-9 on hard courts this year. This one should go further, Halys’ form in 2022 will see him cross the line in third.

Prediction: Halys in 3
