Will Power wins both poles for IndyCar doubleheader

NEWTON, Iowa — Will Power dominated qualifying at Iowa Speedway to claim the grid pole for both NTT IndyCar Series races.

Power has now qualified first three times this season and has 66 career poles – one shy of tying the legendary Mario Andretti for the all-time IndyCar record.

“This qualifier, the whole season, I’ve been thinking, ‘This is where I can really do some damage, I can really, really put myself in a position to get there,'” Power said.

QUALIFICATION RESULTS: Race 1 l Race 2

STARTING SETS: Race 1 l Race 2

“I rode it as much as you could. I left nothing on the table.”

Power damaged teammate Josef Newgarden for first place at the start in both races. The Penske Dallara-Chevrolet duo, who are second and third in the championship standings, will be on the front row on Saturday and Sunday.

Meanwhile, points leader Marcus Ericsson will start 12th on Saturday and 15th on Sunday.

“I felt like you have to start in the top 10 to have a good race,” Power said. “It seemed a bit difficult to pass. Although cars can fall a lot. You can make some positions, you can make some positions with strategy.

“Hopefully it’s a good weekend for us to catch Marcus because he’s very tough. He’s not the best qualifier, but he’s probably the best racer in the series. Just in the years I’ve watched him race, he’s one of the toughest guys out there. Like he’s very, very good at starting there and going all the way to the front.”
