ATP Bastad predictions on 3

Pablo Carreno Busta vs Albert Ramos Vinolas

Head to head: Carreno Busta 3-1 Ramos Vinolas

This is the best match of the day between two clay veterans and compatriots. Neither is having an above-average season, but both are competent and have offset styles. Pablo Carreno Busta boasts a solid, mostly defensive game, but is capable of cutting in and dictating, with his down-the-line backhand a real weapon. Meanwhile, Albert Ramos Vinolas is a cunning and intelligent defender. All three of their previous matches on clay resulted in Carren Busta winning, but each went to three sets, including two third-set tiebreaks. In other words, it should be close, but Carreno Busta has the edge.

Prediction: Carreno Busta in the 3rd

Casper Ruud vs Francisco Cerundolo

Head to head: Ruud 1:0 Cerundolo

Casper Ruud is hard to beat on clay 250, although you’d expect that from the world No. 5 and recent French Open runner-up. Francisco Cerundolo had a very easy match in the first round when he defeated Pedro Sousa of Portugal and he could not face a bigger increase in difficulty unless he faced Rafael Nadal or maybe Carlos Alcaraz. Ruud should absorb the Argentinian’s strength and simply roll over him, and it’s hard to see Cerundolo developing tactics (a la Nadal in the French Open final) to neutralize Ruud’s solid defense and relentless power.

Prediction: Ruud in 2

Diego Schwartzman vs Elias Ymer

Head to head: Schwartzman 2-0 Ymer

Elias, Ymer’s older brother, has spent most of the year on the Challenger circuit and after dispatching Daniel Altmaier, his reward is to face tournament favorite Diego Schwartzman. The Argentine is 20-8 on clay this year and should be in control of this matchup, although Ymer is a decent claycourter at the Challenger level. Expect Schwartzman to be able to limit openings for Ymer with his strong defense and dictate plays with his forehand. Barring unforeseen circumstances (Schwartzman can be a bit unpredictable), this should be a no-brainer.

Prediction: Schwartzman in 2nd

Aslan Karatsev vs Hugo Gaston

Head to head: Gaston 1:0 Karatsev

Aslan Karatsev is hard to predict at the moment. He entered this tournament 1-6 on clay and hitting well under .500 this year, but just had a good win over Lorenzo Sonega. One match isn’t a change of direction, but he faces a beatable opponent in Hugo Gaston, who is yet to have the kind of season predicted by the rise in 2021. Their previous meeting came at the Challenger in Pau two years ago, when both were significantly less successful, but Gaston made up for it he got credit as well as credit for just walking past an opponent (Nikoloz Basilashvili) who is very similar in style to Karatsev. . The latter favors the French, but expect a close fight.

Prediction: Gaston in 3
