After the exciting Wimbledon, the hybrid summer season on clay and hard court begins. The clay-preferring WTA players traveled to beautiful Lausanne, Switzerland for this event. Sara Sorribes Tormo is the biggest name in the Day 1 action and is always a danger to make a deep run on the clay. All six opening round matches can be seen right here on Last Word on Tennis.
Day 1 WTA Lausanne Predictions
Lucia Bronzetti vs Anastasia Potapova
Head to head: first meeting
Bronzetti is in the midst of a great year, recently hitting a career-high 71. She is at her best on clay, with her last five ITF finals coming on the surface as well as her last two titles at this level. Potapova is an exciting talent who also plays best on clay. She won her first career WTA title on clay in Istanbul this April. Bronzetti has collected a lot of wins on clay this year, although he hasn’t produced many results at the tournament level against the top competition. Potapova has also faltered a bit in the bigger tournaments, but she had an incredible journey to victory in Istanbul as a qualifier. Potapová could not Wimbledon because she is russian and they only played one match on grass, so they were probably still primarily training on clay. Her talent outweighs Bronzetti and she comes in fresh so she will start strong and get a convincing win.
Prediction: Potapová in the 2nd
Clara Burel vs Lin Zhu
Head to head: first meeting
Burel is hoping to right the ship after losing her last four games to drop her record to 7-15 in 2022. Zhu is a veteran player who has never quite reached the top level but has won two ITF titles this year. Both players are at their best on hard court, although Zhu will be glad to get off the grass, where she has lost all three matches. She made it well to the semi-finals last week in Portugal and finished the clay season well by qualifying for the French Open. Burelová switched to clay last week as well, but lost her opening match in Bastad 6-2 6-1. Zhu will rely on his experience and the result will be a form that Burel hardly has. Burel doesn’t have the best game by far and Zhu was good enough to take advantage of that and outplay her.
Prediction: Zhu in 2nd
Lauren Davis vs Sara Sorribes Tormo
Head to head: 1-0 Davis
Davis will be looking to build on her early transition to clay, where she reached the semifinals in Bastad last week. Sorribes Tormo is looking to continue her strong season on clay, where she reached the quarter-finals of Madrid. Sorribes Tormo had to cut her clay court season short after injury, but made a comeback at Wimbledon where she looked healthy and made the second round. The Spaniard has historically been strong on clay, and her energetic game wears her opponents down. Davis is also good on clay and will bring the battle. Sorribes Tormo has the edge and her only major concern is a lingering injury that hinders her physical style of play, but she’s had a few games to get back into shape. Sorribes Tormo will use her excellent clay game to get past Davis and into the second round.
Predictions: Sorribes Tormo in 3
