Jack Sock Wimbledon

ATP Newport day 1 predictions including Jack Sock vs Radu Albot

The grass court season is not over yet. ATP Newport kicks off on Monday, with plenty of top players having their last crack at grass. We here at Last Word on Tennis will offer our predictions for who will advance to the second round. So, who will win on Day 1?

ATP Newport Day 1 Predictions

Peter Gojowczyk vs. Hugo Humbert

Head-to-head matches: Gojowczyk 1:0

This should be easy, but Humbert likes to make life as a predictor a complete misery. The outgoing Frenchman is capable of sensational tennis but has had a terrible year so far. That said, he showed good form at Wimbledon which should hopefully boost his confidence for the rest of the season.

Gojowczyk has never had any real form or results on grass and is unlikely to win this one. Humbert may have a poor set full of mistakes, but there seems to be more confidence and solidity in his game now, and this should be pretty simple – unless he has a shocking match.
Prediction: Humbert in 2

Jason Kubler vs Jordan Thompson

This should be fun between two Aussies. Kubler was one of the breakthrough players Wimbledon, and it’s great to see him achieve this feat at the age of 29 after an injury-plagued career. He showed that he is a really good player, especially on grass.

Thompson is also excellent on this surface. He won the title this year and looked in good form at Wimbledon. This match could be a long shot, but I’ll back Kubler as his confidence will surely be high after a great run in SW19.Prediction: Kubler in the 3rd

Stefan Kozlov vs Steve Johnson

Head-to-head matches: Kozlov 3 -1
This is another interesting match. Kozlov leads the head-to-head with two of those victories on grass a few years ago. However, Steve Johnson destroyed his compatriot 6-0 6-0 in qualifying at Queen’s this year. Johnson played great tennis at Wimbledon, while Kozlov was dispatched by Diego Schwartzman in the first round (not that it was embarrassing in any way)

Kozlov is a skilled player and can be a really tough opponent, but his form doesn’t seem to be great right now. Johnson is the favorite for me due to his form and experience, but things could get interesting if Kozlov finds his best tennis.
Prediction: Johnson in 2nd

Radu Albot vs Jack Sock

Head-to-head: Sock 2 – 0

Jack Sock is apparently he’s on his way back to be a big time player again. The American’s comeback was challenging, but he was patient and the results are definitely coming now. He would be disappointed to lose to Kubler at Wimbledon, but he has a lot of positives right now.

Albot is much less explosive than Sock and can’t defend as well as he usually does on this surface. It will depend on how well the American serves and hits his forehand, but this should be a fairly routine win. Sock has dominant weapons and Albot will do little harm to him on grass. Expect Sock to come through.
Prediction: Sock in 2
